Old Fitzgerald was first produced in 1870 by John E. Fitzgerald. Circa 1900 it was introduced as “Old Fitz” a moniker it still has today, and was one of the few pot still bourbon produced back then. Also one of the few to continue distilling during prohibitiion. Shortly after prohibiton Pappy Van Winkle acquired the Old Fitzgerald brand and substituted some wheat for the more traditional rye in the mash bill. This bottle is some of the first Old Fitz produced by the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, and what makes it so unique. Old Fitzgerald continues to this day, but is made by Heaven Hill now.
